The next generation of consumers is a moving target.
They want access to all their favorite forms of digital info-tainment --music,
photos, video, internet and television--while dashing around their busy lives.
3G, the third generation of mobile communications, is the ideal solution for
consumers on the move. That's why 3G is taking off in a big way, and opening
major opportunities for network operators and service providers.
First in W-CDMA Technology
W-CDMA is a technology that enables 3G mobile communications.
NEC has been an industry leader in W-CDMA for almost a decade.
Our involvement in the research began in early 1990s. Our development continues
today with various kinds of equipment, such as Packet Core Node, Radio Network
Controllers (RNCs), Node-B and Mobile Stations (MSs), all of which solidify
NEC's position as a total system supplier.
NEC with its 3G partner Siemens has delivered W-CDMA products and solutions to
more than 35 Operators in 29 different countries and regions.
Currently NEC/Siemens Node-Bs account for more than 30% of the market share
worldwide, leading NEC/Siemens to No.1 position in supplying commercially
operating Node-Bs around the world.

First Commercial Networks
3G's first commercial service was launched in Japan in 2001. Following this,
2003 saw Britain become the first country in Europe to introduce commercial W-CDMA.
The Market leader in 3G technology, NEC delivers a total solution, ranging from
mobile terminals to infrastructure equipment, which has contributed greatly to the
commercial launch of W-CDMA services both in Japan and Europe.

NEC, a leader in the drive for a global 3G standard
NEC believes that global standards are essential to the success of 3G mobile
networking. We have been working, for many years, with a variety of groups
dedicated to developing and promoting an international 3G standard.
The push for a global 3G standard began in 1985 due to the efforts of Study Group 8 (SG8)
of France's International Radio Consultative Committee (CCIR). In 1994, NEC became very
active in the movement toward standardization as a key member of Japan's ARIB. In December
of 1996, through the UMTS workshop, NEC proposed a W-CDMA system to ETSI. In that capacity,
we have continued to very actively support the drive for global standardization.
NEC is committed to the standardization of W-CDMA as a worldwide, mobile, 3G communications system.
We believe that W-CDMA will play an important part in worldwide communications satisfying the demands
of a new era, contributing to the growth of the world economy, and raising the quality of life for
people everywhere. Standards are the foundation of tomorrow's mobile multimedia networks.
