W-CDMA Line Up
Packet Core Node

The NEC Packet Core Node is the first product based on the advanced new platform for
mobile operators that employs PICMG (PCI Industrial Computer Manufactures Group) Forum
ATCA (Advanced Telecom Computing Architecture). This advanced, high-performance packet
core node can handle a large volume of internet application traffic - not only packetized
voice and video, but also emerging new services like on-line gaming over the 3G Mobile
Packet Network.
NEC introduced the world's first operational ATCA-based system for SGSN and GGSN in September
2003, and more than 150 of them are already up and running in different commercial fields.
The new ATCA-based platform also employs carrier-grade Linux and NEC middleware. NEC's middleware
offers particularly high carrier-grade reliability and capabilities, backed by the company's long
experience and wide-ranging know-how in public network systems.
Worldwide, the mobile internet market is expanding rapidly. Users today not only expect the
capability to transmit large volumes of data (e.g. for video), but also the shorter response time
required in the growing number of IP-based data services. In particular, the advanced mobile
internet 3G arena needs further flexibility to handle various kinds of IP traffic. The ideal
solution for mobile operators is to use a new type of packet core system with high IP packet
transmission performance, because that enables them to create a balance between their investment
and profit. NEC, which leads the world in mobile internet know-how, is providing mobile networks
with precisely those advantages by introducing its advanced, flexible and comprehensive SGSN/GGSN
product based on an ATCA platform.
NEC's Packet Core Node (SGSN/GGSN) realizes a maximum throughput of 6.2 Gbps. Another key advantage
is that it separates the user plane, which handles video and other high-speed, large-volume user
packet data speed, and the control plane, which handles packet session control: this allows
operators to easily and flexibly configure the product to suit their own services.
With the advantage of having compatibility with PICMIG, the industry standard, and the advent of
higher performance processor boards that can be mounted on AdvancedTCA platform, NEC's Packet Core
will make further improvement of its ability in the future.
