Mobile Operators are surrounded by change. Demand for data services is growing rapidly and the mobile market continues to draw closer to the fixed line market and Internet environments. 3GPP' s IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) introduces technology to support these network changes, and brings new concepts to enliven mobile services. For users, it delivers an entirely new, but intuitively right experience; for operators it provides solutions for fundamental problems such as reducing churn and creating new revenue streams.

IMS services are based on the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) that has been developed within the IETF. SIP is firmly grounded in the culture of the Internet and has drawn heavily from the experiences of developing protocols such as HTTP and SMTP.
It is specified that its services must be independent of the access media. This principle of access independence means that IMS services can be accessed over existing UTRAN, IP-RAN or W-LAN

Network Evolution with IMS

NEC IMS/I-WLAN solution does not demand a large upfront hardware deployment and this supports an aggressive CAPEX reduction. The SIP session control part, service control and subscriber database for all the other IMS applications, is the minimum configuration for IMS provider. Other functions can be added in a modular fashion to realize services as required. This flexibility is one reason that IMS delivers a TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) reduction to operators and the reason why NEC has backed so aggressively standardization within the industry and our products.

Service Evolution with IMS

IMS will shift the focus of mobile services from only voice, one-to-one services to hybrid multimedia services that blend voice, messaging and video. This will switch the delivery of services from a network centric approach, where services are determined by network architecture, to a customer centric delivery that allows users to determine how they want to communicate.

NEC’s IMS Products

IMS is built on industry standard, standardized platform that facilitates new customer experience, lowers total cost of ownership and reduces the time it takes to bring new services to the market. NEC's IMS portfolio consists of 5 basic parts: 1) SIP session control, 2) SIP Applications, 3) Inter-working with different networks, 4) Gateways to existing infrastructure, and 5) Mediation and Network management system.
  1. SIP session control core nodes
    MX5840-CS (P-CSCF, I-CSCF, S-CSCF, BGCF)
    MX5640-HS (HSS, HLR, 3G AAA)

  2. SIP Application servers
    MX7840-PR (Presence)
    MX7840-CT (Instant Message/ Chat)
MX7840-PT (Push to Talk over Cellular)
    MX7840-MR (MRF-C, MRF-P)

  3. Inter-working nodes with different networks
    MX5840-MC (MGCF)
    MX5240-MG (IMS-MGW)
    MX5840-SI (IETF-3GPP SIP Interworking)
WAG (Wireless Access Gateway) / PDG(Packet Data Gateway)
    MSC-IWF (MSC Interworking Function)

  4. Mediation and Network management system

Advanced TCATM platform

Advanced TCATM (Advanced Telecom Computing Architecture, ATCA) is a set of industry standard specifications that have been developed for the next generation of carrier class telecommunications equipment. Within the chassis and blade design, telecommunication equipment can be built and deployed in a physical environment optimized for high grade communication solutions.
NEC believe very strongly that ATCA is the right hardware platform for IMS because it meets the necessary levels of flexibility and reliability and is created from open standards.
