Network Evolution with IMS

Illustrated below (figure 1) is NEC’s line up of IMS products, many of which are built upon an ATCA platform. (Some non-IMS nodes are included for ease of understanding).
This does not mean, however, that an operator has to procure all of these elements in order to provide IMS based services. The SIP session control part, which provides voice call and instant message as IMS basic service, service control and subscriber database for all the other IMS applications, is the minimum configuration for IMS provider. Other functions can be added in a modular fashion to realize services as required. This flexibility is one reason that IMS delivers a TCO reduction to operators and the reason why NEC has backed so aggressively standardization within the industry and our products.

Figure 2, below, highlights NEC’s IMS/I-WLAN solution. The MSC-IWF is constructed on an ATCA platform and can be freely combined or distributed according to traffic, geographical and service conditions. Again, this solution does not demand a large upfront hardware deployment and this supports an aggressive CAPEX reduction.
